Wikimania:Requests for rights

edit

Hi can you approve? Thanks --Samuele2002 (talk) 00:20, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I have done it; Samuele2002 is suitably trusted through the community. Naturally rights assignation and removal is at the power of the host community.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:38, 24 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

2023:Help desk

edit

Not sure if you saw this page. There are a few outstanding questions asked on the help desk (I also asked one about the poster session). Is there a separate due date for poster session submissions? OhanaUnited (talk) 23:10, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

You added the 360 view of rooms on 2023:Program (Special:Diff/317194). This is great, thanks a lot !

But there is probably a small mistake, you put the same link for room 310 and 311, is it on purpose ? (I looked on the YouTube but not sure what is the correct link...). Could you have a look ?

Cheers, VIGNERON en résidence (talk) 08:04, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @VIGNERON en résidence:, it has been updated. Thanks. -Exec8 (talk) 03:23, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adding speaker

edit

We have Stephen LaPorte joining us for this talk as a speaker.

"15:30 15:50 7:30 7:50 The Case for NC Commons Douglas Ian Scott (User:Discott), James Heilman Legal, Advocacy and Risks en"

Wondering if someone can add them. Doc James (talk) 02:28, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Doc James:, kindly login to pretalx and add the speaker. The program page will update next week with entries added on Pretalx --Exec8 (talk) 03:22, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hum already did this a couple of weeks ago. While check with Stephen to make sure he has accepted the invite. Doc James (talk) 08:58, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Doc James:, we still don't see Stephen LaPorte as speaker on Pretalx. Kindly edit the submission and add the speaker at Pretalx. --Exec8 (talk) 02:44, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Full protection of Hackathon showcase page

edit

Hello, Exec8! I noticed that you protected 2023:Hackathon/Showcase with the highest protection level (allowing only administrators to edit the page) and with an indefinite duration. This seems rather drastic, as it's a measure usually reserved to very contentious pages subject to constant vandalism, or high-impact templates or mediawiki configuration that affect many pages. Neither of these seem to be the case for that page, and the protection level prevents improvements such as those I added recently. Can you please explain the rationale for such a protection? Thanks, Waldyrious (talk) 16:08, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello - yes, this high level of protection is preventing me from updating the Hackathon page for our upcoming event. Please allow me access to the page so I can put in valid and informative information. Thanks, DTankersley (WMF) (talk) 15:19, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good day. I recommend that you modify 2024:Program/Hackathon page or create a subpage for the said 2024 hackathon for the showcase. Similar to previous Wikimanias like 2018 and prior, the 2023 pages were meant to be locked for historical context. Thank you. Exec8 (talk) 15:44, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The 2024 Wikimania Hackathon event is locked....the event isn't happening until next week. We still need to make updates to it.

2024 Wikimania Hackathon page - locked
Please unlock, thanks. DTankersley (WMF) (talk) 18:38, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand what you meant. Do you intend to move the page or simply edit it? The 2024 page can be edited by any users with confirmed accounts. --Exec8 (talk) 00:40, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
It looks like I've now been autoconfirmed, as I was able to make a minor edit. However, the page was marked for translation by you on July 20 after I asked that it not be, on July 8, 2024 because someone else had marked it for translation earlier in the month. Can you remove that request for translation, please? Thanks, DTankersley (WMF) (talk) 20:54, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Kindly proceed. Translation removed. -- Exec8 (talk) 05:44, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Re: Similar to previous Wikimanias like 2018 and prior, the 2023 pages were meant to be locked for historical context. — as I explained in my initial message, I find it odd that the protection is set at such a level that only administrators can edit the pages, forever. There has been no vandalism and no attempt at revisionism. I understand that discussion archives should not be editable after the final decision is made, to avoid misrepresenting the context, but these are content pages that don't have the same sensitivity. It should be possible for editors to make small fixes and add additional historical information (e.g. links to the video recording, slides, etc.) that was not added during the event or shortly after it finished, but that is still relevant for future readers of the page (including those preparing future editions of the Hackathon). If there are edits that are inappropriate, they can always be reverted. Preemptive locking seems contrary to the wiki spirit, IMHO. --Waldyrious (talk) 15:12, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kindly delete these empty sub-categories. Category:Wikimania 2025/fr, Category:Wikimania 2025/en, Category:Wikimania 2025/de and Category:Wikimania 2025/ja. We are holding translated sub-pages altogether at categories like Category:Wikimania 2025/Translations and Category:Wikimania 2025 Scholarships/Translations. I'd also appreciate if other TA's don't disrupt this consistency. ─ Aafī (talk) 18:52, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
