This is my Wikimania experience, planned and lived. Feel free to add notes if we talked or had an interaction. Bolded sessions are the ones I am part of organizing, all other listed ones I am planning to participate in/watch.

Thursday August 11

• 10.00 Digital Conservation through knowledge sharing (missed it)

• 13.45 Depths of Wikipedia: the encyclopedia's funniest jokes and the role of well-placed jest - great talk, I wish it had been longer as some slides was skipped.
• Saw the last ten minutes of 10 years of Wikidata - how it all started and where it’s going and also the continued Wikimania 2022 - 10 Years of Wikidata - Overtime Discussion - good and cheerful summary of where we are today and how we got here. In the overtime, also a few glimpses for the future. Nothing surprising if you have been around for a while, but if you are new to Wikidata, a good summary of that too.
• 14.05 Writing Women into Wiki History: Experiences and Best Practices (It got postponed due to technical problems.) Saw it on YouTube later - especially nice to hear about the ripple effects from the projects and how events like Wikimania serves as inspiration and knowledge sharing.
• 14.50 WikiLearn: an online learning and skill development platform - great and clear lightning talk. I am still ambiguous to the platform from a strategic standpoint, though. To me, it seems to compete with Wikiversity about development resources from the Wikimedia Foundation.

Friday August 12

• 14.40 Documenting the Chilean constitutional convention on Wikipedia: My experience as a Wikimedian in Residence
• 22.15 Wikimedia, biodiversidad, derechos humanos y medio ambiente
• 22.35 Making a movie with Wikimedia Commons: the story of \the Last Lion\ - very inspiring lightning talk! Now I want to make a movie myself. I just have to figure out the topic :)
• WREN: Reviewing A Year of Wikimedians in Residence Activity, watched this early on YouTube. I am specifically inspired by the Wikipedian at Large concept, which seems like a fantastic way of adding to the sum of knowledge. Not only does it make it possible for smaller areas to have a shared Wikipedian in Residence, but the concept also seem flexible enough to cover gaps that otherwise would fall between the cracks.

• 07.10 Podcasting about Wikimedia in your language
• 07.25 How to promote your activities and why having a PR and fundraising specialist makes sense - inspiring session, I really liked the "2 minutes with a Wikipedian" videos
• 07.55 Education program of GLAM Macedonia
• 08.10 Can we interest you in trying something new together? How we introduced a new software feature to editors through a community-driven campaign on German-speaking Wikipedia - interesting way of launching a feature (but personally I got a bit carried away by what was being launched more than how it was launched :) )
• 08.50 The Helpdesk at the Content Partnerships Hub - first real interactive session for me, and great use of the breakout rooms. II think we managed to give some useful input and look forward to future sessions.
• 09.35 Successes and challenges in partnering with Heritage NGOs/Professionals for better documentation of World Heritage in Global South
• 09.50 Improving mobile web for experienced editors - another great interactive session and nice to see this being worked on.
• 10.45 Live recording of the podcast The World According to Wikipedia
• 11.25 2022:Submissions/The Grand Tour of Wikimedia

• 18.20 Addressing Climate Change and Environmental Issues using Wikimedia Projects: Revisiting the Green Wiki Campaign - good session, but I wish more time had been spent on the Wikimedia projects and less on explaining climate change. Still, nice to see that some new people discovered Wikimedians for Sustainable Development.
• 19.15 Decolonizing the Internet’s Structured Data: join the conversation! - Interesting topic, but the conversation in the Networking area following was even more interesting. I am now even more convinced that the property for citizenship needs clarification, and probably also needs to be complemented with more properties to capture nuances and history better. I think perhaps that the current property could be changed to something like "legal citizenship" where we add constraints or database checks that compare the value's (the country's) start date for issuing citizenships. Similarly, we could use a property like "country on passport held by person". Then, we could use something like "identifies as belonging to" which also could be used farther back in time. However, I think we are still early in this because I feel I didn't get answers on my two questions "What can 'regular' Wikidata editors do differently/better when editing Wikidata?" and "What are our targets (or how do we know that we 'move the needle')?" Also we found that we probably need to clean up animals where they have "subclass:pet" and move the value to the property "has use" and possibly qualify that with regions if necessary.

Sunday August 14

• On-demand program: The dilemma of paid editing “market” on Wikipedia - thoughtful lightning talk which had some very interesting ideas. I feel compelled by the argument that giving more room for ethical actors might undermine the scammers, but also agree that the other questions that follow are hard to solve. Perhaps this could be piloted/explored on a language version where the local community can task an affiliate to maintain a list of authors that have complied with the rules in the past?
• LinguaLibre: pivoting to diversity - unfortunately a bit poor audio quality
• The challenges and opportunities of building a Community - unfortunately brutally cut for time in the middle of the slides with lessons learned.
• 08.00 Wikimania 2023 Announcement - Singapore, but no mention of it becoming a hybrid event. We need to fix that - both to reduce the need for carbon intensive travel, but also to allow for a wider inclusion of the community, not everyone has the possibility to go for a long trip.
• 08.15 Understanding DEI in Wiki Loves Monuments and federated campaigns at-large - interesting topic, deserved a longer time slot, would have been valuable if it could have gone even deeper in the topic. Now it was mostly statements from each panelist and no time for the panel to reflect on what just said and have a discussion.
• 08.50 Ninai/Udiron: Using Wikidata Items and Lexemes for Abstract Wikipedia-Like Text Generation - excellent presentation! Takes you through the foundations and presents a promising approach for the future. Should be considered as mandatory viewing for anyone seriously interested in lexemes or abstract Wikipedia. The way that the pre-recorded video utilizes story telling techniques and visual aid should also be considered as inspiration for anyone about to create a pre-recorded presentation for any conference.
• 10.30 Image credits in Wikipedia: Can we do better? - as usual with questions in titles, the answer is yes. My point of view is that any system should be automatic, but with possibility to manually override it per image. I signed my interest for the experiment.
• 11.20 The Future of Wikimania - good framing, ensuring 2023 will be a hybrid. Great follow-up talk in Networking about what we want with Wikimania, what success looks like and how to do good hybrid events.

• 15.55 Growing WikiForHumanRights: Learning from a Global Topics for Impact Campaign
• 16.45 Event Registration Tool v.0 - promising tool! I wish they already were aligned with the Calendar on Diff, but perhaps they will be now.

• \Knowledge. Power. Equity.\ - A WMDE discussion series on issues of equitable distribution of power - very interesting format that I hope other affiliates copy locally so that discussions in more diaspora are enabled. Would be great with a short how-to as well I guess for those (as this was more an explanation of the concept and inspiration.) Also, one of their topics was a bit relevant for my work!

• 2022:Submissions/Making Meaning of “Knowledge Equity” and “Knowledge as a Service”: A panel discussion with Maryana Iskander, Wikimedia Foundation CEO - promising topic, but unfortunately half of the panelists had technical topics so the discussion fell short and the session was wrapped up early.
