Editing and imports
editCurrently involved in some of the preparatory works at Wikimania website with existing global rights. That includes replicating numbers of components that were used in previous Wikimania wikis. If you require imports of specific template:, module: or mediawiki: namespace pages, please leave a request below. Typically imports would primarily be taken from wm2018:, though it is possible to also readily import from earlier wikimania wikis, meta and enWP.
For specific suggestions for the wiki itself, they should be made at phab:T214888 where coordination of the site is currently taking place. Billinghurst (talk) 05:36, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
To do list
edit- Protect imported modules (generally would freshly import, note talk pages for customisation)—awaiting admin rights prior to proceeding
- Protect priority templates
Finish migrating language messages for gadgetsDonedesign templates to generate message tables for respective "mediawiki talk:" messagesDone at least v.1landing pages for Special:ListGroupRights, mostly think that they will be redirects.Done- MediaWiki:Recentchangestext— mw messages for Newbies • Anonymous • Deleteme (0)
- Categorisation of templates
- Review categorisation used at previous WMs, and look to implement categorisation system locally, noting that when other are WMs merged that their categorisation will follow with them.
- Structure Wikimania: ns pages and introductory pages; and links from main ns. See user:billinghurst/Wikimania ns
- Wikimanias page to current and past. (ns:0)
- to mw_talk: pages, create a template that sits at the top that describes the context of the page being translated: sidebar link, sidebar description, gadget description (current uses).
Start some new translations
editHi,dear bureaucrat. Could you please start some new translations of pages like Travel guide and Hackathon? As an autoconfirmed user, I have edited the page Hackathon, but failed to wake up the translate extention. Or you can consider to gave me the right of translate administrator? --游魂 (talk) 19:31, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @游魂: I've added the Hackathon page, but note that I had to remove the manually added marker
<!--T:1-->
before doing I did so -- the software has to add those markers; if humans do it then that can confuse the software. :-) - I'm not going to mark the Travel Guide yet, because it is still undergoing extensive editing, and it's best to not mark pages too early (because that can waste the time of translators, and it makes editing pages more complicated in the original language. Once it seems to have stabilized, we can do so (just leave a note on the page's talkpage, if someone doesn't get around to it reasonably quickly).
- Thanks for all your work on the other translations! Quiddity (talk) 23:47, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
Visibility
editHello Billinghurst. I sincerely think the current way is not clear enough and actually confusing. Best regards --Yug (talk) 07:58, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Yug: I don't necessarily disagree with you. However, what you did duplicated the detail on the page, and this is the main page, and a translated page. So this should be discussed through the talk page, not simply implemented based on one person's thoughts alone. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:31, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
Mbox rendering
editIs there something different on Wikimania wiki that is preventing Mboxes from rendering properly. Check Module:Message box. --QEDK (talk) 07:18, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @QEDK: The module was imported from WM2018, though if you are not seeing it working then there will be some difference. Without knowing where you were editing and what you were expecting, all I can suggest is that the underlying style has some difference. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:07, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- I updated the contents to be latest, by enwiki standards and furthermore, also updated the dependency modules, unfortunately some elements aren't rendering at all. Does {{Mbox}} have a border and a box with a dark gray background for you? If yes, then it is a system-specific issue or else, it is a site-issue. --QEDK (talk) 13:36, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- I've reduced it to a site configuration issue, if I could have temporary sysop rights for this wiki, I could make some basic MediaWiki changes that should get basic templates working. --QEDK (talk) 13:39, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Import Histlegend
editThanks for importing MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer!
Please could you also do m:MediaWiki:Histlegend and m:MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer-anon? I almost did it, but then remembered that interface-admin is needed to localize the links within after it's here. Cheers :-) Quiddity (talk) 07:01, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Quiddity: Imported, and updated, though all not functionat the targets. Time for a target review, and look at the same at meta.
Re editing, as they are not javascript or css pages, they should not need interface-admin rights, just need "editinterface" which is in admin. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:19, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Quiddity: and how about we look to get you local admin-interface rights. I have a dim recollection that you have some knowledge of interface, a basic level of earnt trust, and maybe some sort of competence. <huge grin> — billinghurst sDrewth 23:24, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Blocked accounts
editCan you add a new topic on User talk:BlondellJ43 saying: {{subst:uw-block|no time set}}? Thanks! Mr Beoy 22:12, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
When you add the template, there will already be a signature, so don’t sign it. --Mr Beoy 22:13, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Mr Beoy: No. This is not the wikipedias. I cannot see any need to label spambot pages. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:09, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- Further, if I am blocking someone they will get personal treatment, and will well know what is going on without some sort of customised template. This is not Wikipedia, with few admins, and next to no problems. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:13, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Translations
editHi Billinghurst!
I noticed these translations from an IP address. I do not speak any of the languages, but to me, it seems more like spam than actual translations. Is it possible to mass revert / delete translations if that's the case, or would we have to manually go through all of them? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 14:08, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
- I removed them before seeing your message here, but it was just blatant vandalism, or few possible machine translations. Stryn (talk) 16:38, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
Uzbek (Cyrillic) translation of the Main Page
editHi Billinghurst,
You created this translation but didn't translate anything in it. Why did you create it? If anyone ever creates an actual Uzbek translation, they can create it here and the script converter would be supported, so there is no need for a separate uz-cyrl translation. DraconicDark (talk) 15:36, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
- @DraconicDark: That is not how it occurred. You are seeing an artefact of manipulation of work in Wikimania. Someone created translations for a part, and those parts were deleted by me. The system did the re-creations following the deletions. Yes, it is that crazy at times. I have (re)removed them now. — billinghurst sDrewth 16:06, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: Sorry for the misunderstanding. DraconicDark (talk) 17:13, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
- @DraconicDark: not an issue. Trying to make sense of it is a challenge for all of us. Thanks for bringing it to my attention as it is resolved. While I have your attention, can I point you to Wikimania:Mediawiki pages with translations/uz as I reckon you can help me out with system messages. :-) — billinghurst sDrewth 10:53, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
2006 import
editHi. I spotted the import of Wikimania 2006/Boston and was wondering if that shouldn't rather live in the 2006:
namespace? I also noticed that some of the pages e.g. Wikimania 2006/Planning has a duplicate copy over at 2006:Wikimania 2006/Planning. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 07:39, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- I was also wondering this. — regards, Gisado aka Revi 11:37, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
Volunteering to be a site administrator
editHello Billinghurst. I came here because I see you're a bureaucrat. I'm volunteering to be an administrator for this site since it's looking like this wiki will last multiple Wikimanias. I am an administrator of the English Wikipedia and Cantonese Wikipedia, and was a bureaucrat and administrator of the Wikimania 2013 wiki, so I'm quite comfortable with housekeeping tasks of Wikimania conference wikis. I have attended 7 past Wikimanias and intend to go to Stockholm this year too. If there's a formal process to request admin rights somewhere else, let me know. Spam
editHi Billinghurst! At the moment, there's a lot of spamming going on at this page. Is there any way of preventing this? And also the fact that there's so many new accounts created that only seems to be spam accounts? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:13, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
- (ec) @Eric Luth (WMSE): Doing what we can. They are using some pretty way out domains, and often one-use, or low low frequency domains among all the spam. We are stopping amounts if you have a look at special:log/spamblacklist and special:abuselog. The means for control of this is to stop the creation of the spam accounts, rather than trying to manage once they are inside the house. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:18, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
- The others are often blocked in these other places. Feel free to block them, I doubt that we are going to be the source of new users, especially where they fit the patterns. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:19, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Eric Luth (WMSE): The content of the spam is pretty rudimentary, and as content, all over the place. For the moment it has receded. We could look to a filter that challenges the addition of a url for a new account, and probably some other tests, that will slow down the spam, though it will have false positives. Generally I think that any account that is created here is immediately dodgy as this wiki is more likely to be a referred to wiki, rather than a "Welcome to WMF" first call. If it springs up again, I will do something like that. @Trizek, Stryn, Quiddity, and TheDJ: other thoughts? — billinghurst sDrewth 05:47, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- Do we have a way to protect the entire 2019: namespace, wince Wikimania is over now? Trizek from fr: 10:49, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Trizek: We can write a filter to at least restrict editing to the namespace auto-confirmed accounts for the now, and work out where to at a later point. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:56, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- It would be a first good parade. I'm adding recent changes for this wiki in my patrolling list. Trizek from fr: 11:14, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Note to fellow administrators: default block durations
editHi to anyone watching. I have set some defult block durations, different for user accounts and IP addresses. I hope that the durations are acceptable. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:33, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

2021 namespace
editHi, I just noticed yesterday that we don't have the 2021 namespace yet, so I created a phab ticket. But it has not got the +2 code review it needed to deploy and I guess, it will be deployed in the next week. I can't tag for translations if the namespace is not created. Is it possible for you somehow to deploy it fast-forward? -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:00, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Pfft, I have zero power and influence. @Martin Urbanec: care to comment. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:33, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Martin Urbanec and Billinghurst:, as the 2021 namespace is now created all the previous pages created for 2021 Wikimania got vanished. Any way to fix this? -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 11:48, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Bodhisattwa: There is a maintenance script to run to get the pages moved/identified to the namespace. I suggest you add it to the ticket, and I forget what it is called and nothing at mw:Manual:Maintenance_scripts rings a bell. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:28, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- Martin already has fixed this as soon as the ticket was filed on phab. Thanks -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 12:30, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello. You might wanna protect the template as it is widely used. --Minorax (talk) 03:01, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
