Abstract
editThe 2030 Strategic direction states “we, the Wikimedia contributors, communities, and organizations, will advance our world by collecting knowledge that fully represents human diversity.”
Partnerships are essential, to achieve this goal. Organizations hold much of the knowledge Wikimedia wants to provide.
This session will explore the future of content partnerships on a global level and explore how affiliates and individuals can work together to achieve all goals around partnerships.
Description
editWikimedia Sverige believes that strong partnerships are key to making more free content available on our platforms, and we have worked with partners for over ten years to identify gaps and make content available to fill them. We have made almost 300,000 media files available online on Wikimedia Commons together with partners, and created over 400,000 new items on Wikidata.
This session will explore how individuals, affiliates and communities can support each other to work on partnerships. Different perspectives are needed to fulfil the needs of the entire movement and bring the support needed in different contexts. Single users as well as large affiliates have capacities needed for strong partnerships.
Parts of the Wikimedia movement, however, lack capacity for forming partnerships, as tools, documentation and capacity building is missing. This lead to gaps when it comes to the organization and support of partnerships in the movement, and, in turn, that a lot of knowledge is left out. More partnerships with intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) need to be formed, a work that needs extra focus. Not the least since they are great stakeholders with a lot of knowledge from multiple countries.
We view ourselves as a service provider for the movement and want to help catalyze change. We want to work with affiliates and volunteers both long term (e.g. new tools; formalizing partnerships with IGOs/INGOs) and short term to change this situation. We want to actively work with others to develop these insights into a full plan on how to solve it.
We are interested in increasing the capacity for partnerships, through a future thematic hub we hope to establish. The Strategic recommendation to “Ensure Equity in Decision-making” opens up for a new division of responsibilities, where stakeholders will gather into different areas of expertise. We believe there is a need for the movement to work together strategically to make content available on the Wikimedia platforms through partnerships, and that Wikimedia Sverige can help create this.
Session Outcomes
edit- Exploring experiences from working with partnerships in the past, especially difficulties or issues that need to be solved.
- Exploring and mapping how the movement can support and share resources among us, including skills, technical knowledge connections, cultural knowledge and local context needed for partnerships, and how a hub organization could support that work.
- Inspiration for how to form and carry out different kinds of content partnerships at home, and why they are important.
I'm planning to attend this session live!
