Questions

What is "the" speaker training program (in the FAQ), and where can I find it?

The FAQ section refers to "the" speaker training program, that may help us be accepted into the program. The wording implies a specific training program.

What is it referring to?

The acceptance emails to speakers included information about this. I can't recall to see any details published onwiki. Ainali (talk) 09:47, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Virtual corner for sessions

We have been thinking about running a couple of sessions at Wikimania; one session will be part of the Hackathon. These two sessions will be around user research (for Toolhub project) and technical support (for Small wiki toolkits (SWT) project). Due to the nature of these sessions, one session might not be enough, and we might want to run several of these, ideally with people in small groups. We haven't entirely finalized the format yet, but we are considering having a dedicated virtual corner where folks can hop in and out any time and work with us. We are still in the early stages of our discussion and wonder if there will be a virtual corner at Wikimania where we could run these sessions. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 21:10, 3 June 2021 (UTC) (On behalf of the Toolhub + SWT project team)Reply

There will be space available beside the hackathon space;
  • 2021:Community Village - focus on specific communities -- where you are welcome to set a subpage for the Toolhub
  • 2021:Learning areas - focus on training for anyone interested -- open training sessions can be hosted from here, along with how to videos and other media
These spaces can host longer discussions, general meetups, and other similar adhoc activities. All of these spaces will need to follow Friendly space policy but can use alternative platforms. Gnangarra (talk) 13:00, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
At the Wikimedia Hackathon this year there was used WorkAdventure as a Platform and I really liked it for talking to other people. At the Remote Chaos Experience of the Chaos Computer Club they have also used Workadventure with extensions and so it can be used for a lot of if people if needed. It were great if you offer a platform like Workadventure. I think if there is one platform it is better than more platforms. I dont know if a dial in with a phone is possible at this system. From my point of view this is helpful after not everywhere there is a good internet connection. From my point of view this Wikimania offers the chance to offer more people the chance to be involved and for that it is from my point of view important that there is a support for people so that they can attend. Are there plans for such a support. As far as I remember for some talks for the Movement Strategy there attended people who said that they got a data package so that they have a high enough bandwith for attending.--Hogü-456 (talk) 17:58, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Emergency contact number

In the Pretalx system, on page2, it asks for "Emergency contact information - this contact number will be used in case of any emergency during the event"

Does this mean:

  1. My personal phone number (e.g. if I seem to be missing my start-time)
  2. A phone number for someone else related to my submission (e.g. my backup-speaker/session-partner)
  3. A phone number for someone connected to me personally (e.g. my health-emergency contact, such as a relative/neighbor/friend)

Whichever the answer, I suggest clarifying it within Pretalx itself. Thanks! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 01:22, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Quiddity (WMF) The reason we are collecting phone numbers is to make sure that we have easy access and a way to reach you in timely manner during the event, in case of any technical challenges. This process is part of the risk management and contingency plan for this event and will be used only if we experience technical difficulties from the production or your side. The phone number that needs to be provided should belong to one of the presenters (individual/collective track) or a coordinator of the affiliate (movement groups & affiliate track). Hope this clears it up. JLetang (WMF) (talk) 09:13, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Formats?

In the How will program applications work in practice? blog post the formats are listed as: "Lecture-based session: 20 mins presentation + 10 mins of Question & Answer, Fireside chat / interviews: 30 mins, Discussion (roundtable, panel): 45 mins, Workshops + Tutorials: 45 mins, Celebrations/Entertainment: 30 mins" but on the 2021:FAQ they are listed as: "Lecture-based session or Case Study: 20 mins presentation + 10 mins of Question & Answer, Roundtable discussion or Panel Discussion: 45 mins, Workshop or Tutorial: 45 mins, Celebration/Entertainment: 30 mins, Lightning Talk: 10 mins". The latter one is missing the 30 minute Fireside chat/Interview, but instead have a 10 minute Lightning talk. Which one is correct? Ainali (talk) 18:44, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

We'll consider any format that is submitted, both are correct and fall into the Other option Gnangarra (talk) 12:49, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
How are the formats in terms of written structure: number of words, title, name of participants, etc? Lmalena (talk) 15:12, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

How to view existing submissions?

Howdy!
I was just wondering where it's possible to view existing program submissions that have been made public so far (if any exist).
Yours, Yitzilitt (talk) 04:03, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Yitzilitt: you may already have noticed, but we published the submissions that were marked as public so far. Hope that helps! Effeietsanders (talk) 18:59, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Movement Groups & Affiliates Submissions

Good day there!

We've just submitted a proposal for Movement Groups & Affiliates. But we are wondering that is there a official list of Movement Groups & Affiliates that only the team on the list can sign up for the Movement Groups & Affiliates session? We are not a like a regional Wikimedia group but a University's research center who's been holding a Wikimedia incubating program of many small languages for years. If needed, we will then go to submit a new proposal for collective session.Iyumu (talk) 12:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes emerging communities that put forward proposals will be considered, along side all existing affiliates. Gnangarra (talk) 10:01, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Comment / additional info field

Hi all, on the submission form I would have found a field useful for any other comments. For instance, I would prefer if I could create subtitles or translations of my talk myself, for the languages that I'm fluent in. I'm sure there are more use cases of "anything else to say?" --Pgallert (talk) 16:24, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pretalx bugg Wikimania 2021

Pretalx don't works... why no make submission as usual !?

Why one more time using an external website to deal with Wikimania submission !? Can we do it here as usual and with in our habits ? More than this, the pretalx website don't works... So, here is the page of my submission on a subpage of this present page. Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 13:51, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Pretalx is working fine for me, you'll need to expand on what issue you are having. We went with Pretalx because unlike previous years the scheduling of a virtual program benefits from the additional tools. Pretalx was chosen because its an open source tool that provides the team with the tools we need to review submissions and create the program. Gnangarra (talk) 06:49, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for this replay Gnangarra and for renaming my submission page on this Wiki. I've removed this post on the help desk for better coérance. Now I gone try one more time to post my submission on Pretalx recording my page on video and share it here if it still wrong. I'm back soon, Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 10:28, 15 June 2021 (UTC) PS : and the email adresse from the pretalx web site don't works... : The mail system <m-salciute wikimedia.org>: host mx1001.wikimedia.org[208.80.154.76] said: 550 Address m-salciute wikimedia.org does not exist (in reply to RCPT TO command). Here beside Gnangarra is my desk record... Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 11:33, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
thank you the video helped us identify the issue, it will be resolved today Gnangarra (talk) 12:20, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Still not working for me today and the ultimatum is in 2 days Gnangarra. Am I the only one in this incapability to post a submission ? Probably not. It's look like a big issue and a good time to remember that perfect is the enemy of good ;-) . So, I'm waiting a notification before the 18 I hope. May the force be with your team ! Cheers, Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 15:12, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
You are the only who has raised this so I hope its just unique to you. I contacted the WMF team, and Pretalx on this both had assured me the problem was fix. Perhaps you could try creating a new account and see if that works. Either way we do have your submission and it will be reviewed by the program team. Gnangarra (talk) 15:32, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Gnangarra, It still doesn't work. I've deleted my account and now, I can't create a new one. So weird... But well, I don't want to spend any more time. So, I'll edit my other submission here on the wiki and for the first one, you can also add Psychoslave who is interested to join me. Here are links to two other submission : Submissions/Public/Wikimedia drift mission and My PdD thesis about Wikimedia Movement in 30 minutes. Can you keep me in touch with notification ? Cheers, Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 22:31, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok @Gnangarra, It was a problem linked to a lack of notification about the limit of characters on the summary box. And the other bug linked to pretalx help box seems fixed to. Cheers ! Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 12:25, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
that is good news thanks for being patient and providing the video it helped get all this sorted out. Gnangarra (talk) 12:42, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Last question @Gnangarra ... If submission are made on pretalx, they will disappear after Wikimania rather than stay accessible on Wikimania website ? It should be a pity. Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 13:04, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
they will be archived and accessible, the public ones are being updated on 2021:Submissions as well. Gnangarra (talk) 14:02, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Perfect @Gnangarra. Have a nice day ! Lionel Scheepmans (talk) 18:43, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

a basic question

hi. so sorry to ask a very basic question. how do I sign up to attend Wikimania 2021? also, where do i go to sign up or register to make a presentation? sorry for these elementary questions. this page was the only resource I could find for such requests. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 13:34, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

How to see existing proposals?

Hi, I want to check other proposals to make sure I don't overlap too much with them, how do I do that please? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:56, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I would like to do the same. Can we get something like a dump or feed of what's been submitted so far? Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:39, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I ended up just submitting a couple of proposals anyway, I hope the organisers can sort out any overlap. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:21, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Mike Peel and Daniel Mietchen: You probably already noticed, but we posted all submissions that were marked as public. Please use it to your advantage. Effeietsanders (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I see they are at 2021:Submissions#Public_Submissions_received. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:34, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Effeietsanders and Yamen: Will the final list of public submissions be posted, please? I see the list was last updated on the 17th, but I guess there were last minute proposals? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:27, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Panel vs Roundtable

What are the differences between Panel and Roundtable formats? RamzyM (WMF) (talk) 07:37, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • The difference is in the role of the moderator, in a panel the moderator doesnt have to have any knowledge of the subject as their role is to ensure that the Q&A allows all members of the panel to heard when answering questions and ensure that a wide variety of the audience is able to ask questions. In a round table the moderator is knowledgeable on the subject, starts the discussion then also leads the Q&A their job is then to facilitate discussions while both Q&A's come from the participants and they can also provide clarity when needed on the issues being raised. Gnangarra (talk) 15:07, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! RamzyM (WMF) (talk) 11:40, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
In addition to the above, in a panel you have panel members. The role of the audience depends, but generally the role of the panel members is much more prominent. In a round table, the session is much more interactive, and there is much less of a distinction between audience and speaker, other than the moderator. But many variations on both models exist. Effeietsanders (talk) 19:05, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

How strict is the time limit?

As noted above. One of my event proposals is designed in that it requires a minimum of 45 minutes, and preferably 60. Not sure how that will be handled given that "Others" is given as 30 minutes. Please do ping me in an answer. Leaderboard (talk) 22:13, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • @Leaderboard: times will have be very strict each segment must start and finish on time as the WMF is paying for multiple audio translations to and from English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, and German that will take effort behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. There will be an unconference area where discussions can be continued. Gnangarra (talk) 10:54, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gnangarra: Thanks for the response. Since my event is classified as "other" but would hopefully involve some social interaction, does it mean that it will get only 30 minutes no matter what, or is there a chance of it getting 45 minutes (like the sections for panel/roundtable discussions)? The documentation is not explicit on this case. As before, please ping me in an answer. Leaderboard (talk) 12:24, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: both of your submission are in the individual area, I'm not part of the team assessing those submission. Could you please edit the submission to note that 45 minutes is preferred in the abstract section. I'll bring this to COT's attention for discussion. Gnangarra (talk) 12:40, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gnangarra: I've done that; is there anything else I need to do? Leaderboard (talk) 12:57, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: for now just wait for submissions to close and be reviewed, I have raised it with the COT. Someone from the review team will contact you Gnangarra (talk) 13:14, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Character limit off by 1

I tried submitting a proposal that was exactly 750 characters and it rejected it until I brought it down to 749. Not a huge issue, but thought someone might want to know :) Legoktm (talk) 01:10, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Legoktm: I did not anticipate someone doing the count - I would have been happy to give you 751, if that made a difference :). But this is something you may want to report here instead. Sounds like a fair bug. Effeietsanders (talk) 16:18, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cannot find date of my talk. Is the date already set or still unknown ?

Unfortunaly I Don’t remember which date I set.

Status

It's the end of the working week, and I still have no clue on whether my submissions passed or failed. I was told that I would be contacted by the COT, but that didn't happen either. Am I to assume that I've failed? Leaderboard (talk) 09:58, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi! We have the same question. Or is there a list of the accepted proposals this year? Thank you. Ripunn (talk) 01:23, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Apologies for the slight delay, email notices will be out this week regarding Individual track submissions. Affiliate submission some have already been notified the remainder will be sent out this week as well. Gnangarra (talk) 03:07, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gnangarra, could you please specify what "this week" means, exactly? We still haven't received any response regarding our individual submission. It would be very helpful to at least receive some official notification that the timeframe for the final decisions has been delayed and when we should expect a notification.--Cirdan (talk) 11:28, 19 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Remo is Free software. Isn't it?

Hi everyone!

Some time ago I saw on this wiki that Remo was going to be used and that was «open source». Just for my curiosity, I contacted Remo to ask if it was Free as in freedom software (with 100% JavaScript released under a Free license; without proprietary trackers; without proprietary resources; without minified unclear stuff or bitcoin miners; without requiring any proprietary client; weird unclear external resource; ecc.), and they said «yes yes yes» and they linked me their GitHub repository and I was happy. But. Today our kind User:Ainali [1] pointed out that this situation is not clear enough and, moreover, now I can't find the above assertion anymore and I can't find their GitHub repository in any way. (Did they delete the repository?)

Question: Is Remo (still?) Free Software? If not, can we invest in it to make it Free software? if not, can we use something else? Thank you so much. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 09:56, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Today I tried Remo from this public URL https://live.remo.co/e/wikimania-practice-day-1 shared from the Wikimania chat on Telegram and I can confirm that Remo it's proprietary software. It has proprietary trackers, proprietary minified JavaScript, weird dependencies from external big companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon. Here all of the external dependencies:

These are some of the external dependencies that can be found with "uBlock" and NoScript for Mozilla Firefox. Most of them are proprietary :( Some of them are user trackers.

Moreover, visiting Remo you accept the respective privacy policies. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 11:04, 3 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I believe this discussion is duplicate in various places by now. Please let's pick one location for a good long term conversation. I think you'll get most out of such a conversation after this year's conference. There are many things to improve if we want to repeat this online conference style, and one thing to consider in that context is the choice of venue. To the best of my knowledge, Remo is not open source. I also read on some places that it was, but can't pin down where that assumption started. We did make an effort to support free platforms in some other places (like the session submission platform), so the willingness is definitely there. If you have practical questions left with regards to the platform, I'm happy to see if we can find an answer. Otherwise, I suggest we move this to a conversation page about future events (probably not just Wikimania). Effeietsanders (talk) 23:54, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

...and Miro?

Same question for Miro. What is it? is it Free software? Anyone interested in user freedom during this event? Can I help in any, any, any, any way to figure out what it is and look for a solution before it is included in this event as final decision? Thank you! --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 11:56, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Miro is not free software. Ainali (talk) 09:21, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Miro is unfortunately not a choice for us - it is an integrated part of Remo and a recent change to their software. Effeietsanders (talk) 23:59, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

2021 WM Eventbrite registration procedure: some snags

Dear Lodewijk aka Effeietsanders,

I am contacting you as you are listed here as one of the organizers. (I have also noted this email route but I would rather use my WP account and enquire in the clear, also to advise other Wikipedians by linking hereto should they raise similar doubts on other wikiprojects.)

Please advise me about the T&Cs of the Eventbrite registration for 2021 WM. As a test I singed up yesterday using an anonymous email account and not providing my wikinym, for obvious reasons. However, after 24 hours I have not received a working link or password, apart from the generic confirmation "Order Confirmation for Wikimania 2021 ... The organizer will follow up with instructions on how to redeem your ticket and access the event."

Should we thus wait and keep looking up in this temp account until WM commences? Are there additional T&Cs (Eventbrite's? Organizers'?) apart from the ones published here? Is registration decided manually, e.g. based on the answers provided in the form? I have some other comments about the process itself but let me leave it at that for now.

Bows from equally fleetingly variegated, mostly working in es and plwikis nowadays

Zezen (talk) 07:54, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question copied from my user talk page. Effeietsanders (talk) 23:58, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
No ticket yet as of today, 48 hours after booking. Do ping me when smb types a reply here please. Zezen (talk) 15:04, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I looked it up now, after 96 hours. The only info I can see there is a colourful "Location: Online event", without a reffed URL. Tried with another email account, also anonymous: same results. I could see no updates in relevant Wikimania help pages about the process.
Ping @Effeietsanders as I can see no reply here, either.
Puzzled UX bows Zezen (talk) 06:47, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Zezen: I asked around, and you should receive an email from the organizers with all relevant information after your registration. This will include login details to our event platform Remo. Your registration will typically be approved, unless you're subject to some kind of restriction (which you would have been informed of). I don't know if filling out false information like you seem to have suggested you have done, will cause you to be auto-rejected. Effeietsanders (talk) 15:58, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
