The recent interference in global political campaigns and national elections worldwide has forced the issue of information legitimacy to the forefront. In a digital world of words devoid of mandatory certified sourcing, "information currency" -- the conjunction of accuracy and integrity -- must evolve to ensure free assets do not become fake or discredited knowledge. Automated "certification" processes and associated apps, implemented to maintain the validity of knowledge available for public access and submission, will become front-line tools to ensure free knowledge has high credibility across the digital universe.

Relationship to the theme

This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: Amongst the greatest threats to the use and expansion of free knowledge is the claim of being "fake". In the digital world, trust -- and influence -- are imbued within an instant. Manipulation of trust by bad actors can render free knowledge worthless -- or worse, discredited: consider the current anti-vexer campaign impacts in the U.S. Legitimate long-term information on vaccine outcomes is being digitally "overwritten" by faceless digital publishers of unfounded "facts" that lack information currency. Information currency -- accuracy and integrity of digital content that is continuously "certified" through specialized processes and applications -- helps to rebut false knowledge and engenders trust in the quality of digitally published free knowledge.

Free knowledge cannot expand if it isn't trusted.

Session outcomes

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

Motivate the best coders in the world to develop open source apps that scrub the free knowledge universe of missing, inaccurate and false information to improve the information currency.

Provide process concepts as "thought starters" for new best practices.
