Short description
edit- Any and all aspects of the quality of content on the Wikimedia projects: challenges, successes, initiatives, and tools, to assess, map, improve, and encourage the increase of quality of content on the projects. (Not just Wikipedia!) Some questions we might address in this space: how do we evaluate the quality of different kinds of content (such as environmental or social topics) across different language Wikipedias, and how do we convey that to readers? What are tools for checking and indicating quality in Wikidata or Commons? As we approach the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia, how does quality relate to the long-term sustainability and maintenance of our projects? What are ways we can use improving quality as an outreach tool? And what does quality mean to different projects, languages, and topics?
Background
editAll of our work on every Wikimedia project aims towards producing and improving high-quality information, whether it's a Wikipedia article that is up-to-date, well-sourced, comprehensive, and well-written; an image on Commons that reflects high photographic standards; or a Wikidata item that is accurate, richly described, multilingual, and connected to other data sources.
The idea of quality is closely tied to perceptions of credibility of our work, and how we define and measure quality also is further complicated by the modern online information environment that is increasingly fragmented, contentious, and machine-generated.
However, it has been historically difficult for the Wikimedia projects to define, measure and evaluate quality, or set strategic goals around quality, despite being a fundamental aspect of our work.
Topics
editTopics the session leaders want
edit- We encourage people to submit talks, lightning talks, posters and workshop/do-a-thon proposals for this space, on any aspect of assessing, mapping, improving, and encouraging the increase of quality of content on the projects.
- Formats and times: The quality space is currently scheduled for three 1.5 hour blocks on Sunday, August 18 in a medium-sized room. We will use this track, working with other similar tracks and topics, to deeply engage in the theoretical and practical aspects of quality in the Wikimedia projects.
