2019:Meetups/Wikimania remote meetup
About
editThis page is meant to facilitate a remote meetup at Wikimania 2019 about remote participation in Wikimanias. Folks attending Wikimania on-site are most welcome to participate individually or in groups.
Timing
editIt is being proposed to run about twice:
- on Saturday August 17 from 20:00 Swedish time (i.e 18:00 UTC) for initially an hour but possibly longer
- on Sunday August 18, from 11:30 am Swedish time (i.e. 9:30 UTC) as a remote viewing party of the session "[[2019:Environmental sustainability/Panel on coverage of environmental topics|Climate change, civil engineering, and butterflies - a panel on how to cover environmental sustainability topics on Wikimedia projects]", which is to be live-streamed via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4N-RJ89I24 (which still states the initial starting time of 9:30 am)
Mode of connection
editWe're still figuring this out.
For simplicity, let's use https://meet.jit.si/Wikimania2019 as a starting point (preferably with the video switched off to save bandwidth), taking notes in the etherpad if anything goes wrong. This meeting can be joined by phone, e.g. via tapping +1.512.402.2718,,1861959595#
or using any other dial-in number listed at https://meet.jit.si/static/dialInInfo.html?room=Wikimania2019 . If you are connecting by phone for audio and via the Jitsi room, then make sure to join the latter without connecting to audio: https://meet.jit.si/Wikimania2019#config.startSilent=true .
However, mishaps are likely, so we are exploring other options, including ones that require less bandwidth. If you have suggestions in this regard, please put them forward.
Main results
edit- We founded m:WikiProject remote events.
- We agreed that we will
- try to
- watch "Using Internet-in-a-Box for Education" independently and then share/ comment on each other's notes
- upload that video to Commons, and/ or some screenshots
- the file is now up at File:Using Internet-in-a-box for Education.webm but needs work regarding proper licensing (cf. https://twitter.com/EvoMRI/status/1162933229218934784 ) and structured metadata
- upload that video to Commons, and/ or some screenshots
- watch the panel session "Climate change, civil engineering, and butterflies - a panel on how to cover environmental sustainability topics on Wikimedia projects" together (still remotely) live and see what we can make out of that (e.g. some Twitter thread, a shared blog post or Signpost or Wikidata newsletter piece)
- mark the sessions in the program as to whether they are or have been recorded/ streamed - so reconciling the program page with the video page is a thing that's important for remote attendance
- This is currently not possible, since the Program page has since been protected — see note on its talk page.
- watch "Using Internet-in-a-Box for Education" independently and then share/ comment on each other's notes
- try to
- Connectivity issues complicated the beginning, thereby highlighting that remoteness has its challenges.
- Communication around remoteness needs to highlight that it has multiple facets and is not about replacing the informal interactions taking place in person at the venue but more about enhancing the in-person interactions by making things like the remote and monologue ones or the documentation of the events more efficient, or to facilitate contributions by remote folks or interactions of remote folks between themselves or with others attending in person.
