Session title: ISA tool

Session type: Poster
Track: Education
Language: en

ISA is a fun, multilingual, mobile-first microcontributions tool, that makes it easy for (groups of inexperienced) people to add structured data to images on Commons. It was originally built to provide better multilingual and structured descriptions of Wiki Loves Africa images. But it is also developed to be useful to all of the Wiki Loves X competitions, and eventually ended up being meant for all media files on Wikimedia Commons. It was developed as a collaboration between Wiki In Africa, Histropedia and the Structured Data on Commons project. It is a GLAM pilot for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons.

Description

ISA received the coolest tool WikidataCon 2019 Award in the Multimedia category in October 2019. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2019/Program/WikidataCon_Award It has a great impact on improving all media files on Wikimedia Commons by providing them with better multilingual and structured descriptions. Within 5 years, till 2023, there were 162,083 contributions in the ISA tool by 265 contributors. Link to ISA tool impact: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:ISA_Tool/Impact We are planning to present a poster of this promising tool to increase the awareness about it and encourage others to join its campaigns and share about campaigns in their communities. Beside that, we are planning to organize a campaign to edit on it with simple local gifts for top contributors. There were similar campaigns in previous conferences such as WikiArabia 2019, you can find the link here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiArabia_2019/ISA_Challenge

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

As said, ISA tool was developed as a collaboration between various entities and now has a great impact on improving all media files on Wikimedia Commons. It is ,like all Wikimedia Projects, open to anyone to join and contribute. Furthermore, it is very simple tool that inexperienced people can use easily and by sharing about it in Wikimania 2024 we will increase its audience more and more.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session
