Ferdinando Traversa

I'm Ferdi2005, I'm 17 and I have been a Wikipedian since 2012. I'm the local (volunteer) coordinator for Apulia at Wikimedia Italy, really keen on organising online events and activities in my area. I've led the organisation of the local WLM contest, a number of projects with schools, the university and local institutions. I'm also an eager Wikipedian, admin of it.Wikinews and really passionate about IT, technology and programming (mostly Ruby). https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Puglia_2022_award_ceremony_43.jpg

Abstract

edit

This talk will showcase some projects that Wikimedians have been undertaking in Apulia with educational institutions, a total of 5 schools and the University of Bari, working on different Wikimedia projects and even OpenStreetMap.

Description

edit

Since 2020, in the midst of the Pandemic, Apulian Wikimedians have been carrying on projects with students from schools and university. We have reached a total of 13 educational projects, which involved a wide range of Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikiversity, Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata) and even OpenStreetMap (in combination with Wikivoyage). The topics have been varied as well: the main focus has been the local area, as increasing knowledge available on Wikimedia projects about it is beneficial for the entire community. As we have gained a bit experience, I would like to present why we believe educational institutions should work with Wikimedia projects, a showcase of the most significant projects, their impact and, foremost, the challenges we have faced and the challenges we were not able to face, as the user retention problem. I hope presenting our strategies and approach may help stimulate the discussion about what we could do better in the education field. A part of the time will be reserved to discussion and feedback.
