Abstract & description
editAbstract
editTo arrive at solutions to climate change we need open access to knowledge. But climate change is caused by human activities, as such we also need open culture to understand the why humans have caused climate change. In this workshop, we will remix public domain culture to raise climate awareness and highlight the need for both open climate and culture to solve climate change.
Description
editWhile our collective knowledge and cultures are directly threatened by climate change, they also hold the keys to unlocking fresh solutions through global collaboration. In order to reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including addressing the global climate crisis, it is increasingly urgent to grow and improve the commons. We must partake in a concerted effort to open up knowledge and culture so as to make sense of complex problems. We cannot solve the world’s most pressing challenges if the knowledge and culture about them are closed. In this session, through a playful activity remixing public domain cultural heritage, we will engage the audience in understanding the interplay and alignment between open knowledge and open culture and their roles in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, in particular climate change, as a social justice imperative.
Further details
editQn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
The crux of our workshop is about the importance of human diversity, represented in culture, to the climate crisis. In a world where the human dimension is removed from thinking about how to solve climate change we are centering the need to contextualize solutions with culture and the diversity it encompasses.
