She was part of the legal team who authored version 4.0 of the CC licenses, and has a history of experience on the Wikimedia projects including several years on the board. CC is proposing revisions to its CC0 public domain tool, widely used on Wikimedia projects, combining it with the Public Domain Mark and addressing issues such as its handling of patents. This work should be in progress by Wikimania; this session will give updates, answer questions, and seek additional feedback.

Creative Commons remains an active steward of its licenses and legal tools, including the CC0 public domain tool. CC is proposing to make several revisions to the CC0 tool: primarily, to combine it with the Public Domain Mark (PDM) and to address the problems with the clause excluding patents. (This work is currently still in the planning stage but should be underway and in community consultations by the time of Wikimania.)

In this session, the CC legal team will:

1. present the framing and rationale for these changes, including a discussion of the needs assessment survey given to GLAM institutions

2. discuss the timeline and steps for the process as well as the progress of the work already done

3. discuss the various stakeholder groups who may be affected and ask for additional guidance on groups who should be consulted

4. present the current state of community consultation and solicit additional feedback, particularly as it affects Wikimedia projects and stakeholder groups represented in the Wikimedia community.

5. discuss any other legal issues related to this tool in Q&A

The CC0 legal tool is the primary tool used by individuals and institutions wishing to release any rights they may have into the worldwide public domain, and is widely used on materials such as data sets, digitized cultural heritage works, text intended for wide reproduction, code, and other works where the copyright holder may either believe the work to be uncopyrightable or wish for it to be used without restriction.
