Abstract

The Wikimedia Community User group Uganda undertook a strategic planning process in 2022 in response to the need to formulate a 5-year strategic plan to guide our actions and progress in the future. In a process that involved extensive consultation with volunteers and local partners, the user group had the opportunity to apply a sequence of questions that questioned our very structure , examined our experiences, tested assumptions and therefore determined a course of action that would determine our relevance to the community we serve.

Description

Being semi-autonomous, the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda is not does not only adhere to the Movement Strategy 2030 but is also mindful of local obligations relating to governance in addition to incorporating community voices.. However, this cannot be done by a small group of people and without careful thought therefore it is a matter of careful planning and flexibility at both community and governance levels.

In a process that involved extensive consultation with volunteers and local partners, the user group had the opportunity to apply a sequence of questions that questioned our very structure , examined our experiences, tested assumptions and therefore determined a course of action that would determine our relevance to the community we serve.

The aim of this session therefore is : To share with the wider community the need for a strategic process/plan in order to determine your relevance as a community and respond to a number of changes How we went about the strategic process in our specific setting and the eventual outcome To share the challenges faced, lessons learned and best practices To inspire other communities who may be considering this kind of process in the future

As a process, it involves extensive consultation with individuals (volunteers, stakeholders and even expert consultants) in and out of your community hence incorporating a diversity of knowledge and experiences .It is also an opportunity to seek collaborations as your respond to changes withing your environment and both your internal and external focus changes.
