Since 2019, Wiki Education has partnered with the American Physical Society (APS) to help their members improve English Wikipedia's coverage of both physics and physicists. Now, more than 250 physicists have added 229,000 words to Wikipedia, reaching 45 million readers. Jami Mathewson, Wiki Education's Director of Partnerships, will share why she thinks partnering with like-minded, external organizations can help the Wikimedia community advance its mission and how we've designed a program that mutually fulfills each organization's needs.

Since 2019, Wiki Education has partnered with the American Physical Society (APS) to help their members improve English Wikipedia's coverage of both physics and physicists. APS is an academic association of 54,000 members, and their mission to offer educational programming for their members while engaging in public outreach related to the field has made them a great fit for Wiki Educations Scholars & Scientists Program. APS has run 7 Wiki Scientists courses for their members—from a high school student and aspiring physicist to a Nobel laureate—and Wiki Education has facilitated as more than 250 physicists learned how to bring their expertise to Wikipedia. Thanks to them, English Wikipedia has better information about historically excluded physicists and physics concepts, as participants have added 229,000 words and nearly 3,000 references during this collaboration. So far, their work has reached more than 45 million readers.
In this pre-recorded session, Wiki Education's Director of Partnerships, Jami Mathewson, will share which types of partner organizations have been a great fit for a Wikipedia Initiative, and how these collaborations help us achieve our goals: How do you identify a prospective partner? What messaging has been effective in developing new partnerships? How have we retained partners in order to continue these initiatives? Jami will share why she thinks partnering with like-minded, external organizations can help the Wikimedia community advance its mission and how we've designed a program that mutually fulfills each organization's needs.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?
This session will allow Wiki Education to share powerful collaborations we've had in the past several years, bringing a diverse group of experts to Wikipedia who may have otherwise never clicked the edit button. In order to continue expanding Wikipedia's quality and perhaps compete with other information sources, bringing more content experts into the creation process will be a key way to achieve the movement goals set out for 2030.
