Abstract

Introduction to Matrix, a real-time communication network that's compatible with Wikimedia values, has a modern UX, and provides a decent migration path from most other networks.

Description

edit

Real-time communication is important for building large online communities and scaling up discussions, and with the growing popularity of various commercial messaging tools, user expectations towards it are growing rapidly; but the Wikimedia chat landscape remains fractured, and the most established network, IRC, is a 35 years old protocol with a stone-age user experience that repulses most would-be participants. This adds to the already large pile of problems the Wikimedia movement has with engaging new users.

Amongst all the competing real-time communication networks, arguably Matrix is the the one best aligned with the Wikimedia movement values, and also the one on the most solid technical foundation. We should prioritize it over systems with horrible user experience (such as IRC) and commercial, closed-source tools (like Telegram or Discord). The poster session provides a short introduction to it.
