Hey there! I’m Valerie, Community Communication Manager for Wikibase. My role is set to maintain and foster a community-centered, participatory and collaborative software environment. I’m busy building constructive information flows where ideas, wishes, bugs or compliments are forwarded from the Community to the Software Development team and vice versa. :-) Happy to see as many of you in our upcoming lecture on Wikibase and it’s role in the LOD web!

Christos Varvantakis

I am a Partner Manager at Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE). I am responsible for connecting with global institutions and organisations, and onboarding them to Wikidata and Wikibase. I also act as a point of contact and information exchange for Partners, WMDE’s software department, and Wiki Communities. My background is in social anthropology (PhD Freie Universitat Berlin) and I love working with socially-minded people and organisations, especially on issues relating to opening, diversifying, decolonizing and democratizing knowledge.

Abstract

Learn what Wikibase is, what role it plays in the world and as part of the Wikimedia movement, and understand the Linked Open Data Web through examples of different use cases.

Description

Wikibase is free software that stores and organizes information that can be collaboratively edited and read by humans and by computers, translated into multiple languages and shared with the rest of the world as part of the Linked Open Data (LOD) web.

In this presentation, you will learn several fascinating aspects about Wikibase: What is Wikibase: How is it related to Wikidata, How it functions, How it’s used by different organizations internationally, What is its role in the LOD web,

You will hear about the significance of structured and linked data in building collaborative knowledge bases. To make things more tangible, we will make sure to show different examples that show how Wikibase facilitates the fostering of open knowledge.

Wikibase and the Wikibase ecosystem hold a great potential for the collaborative fostering of open knowledge. We are looking forward to telling you all about it! And to discuss everything with you too, as a large part of the presentation will be reserved for questions and discussion!

Whom is this for? This lecture is intended to entertain individuals that have (probably) never heard about Wikibase and want to learn more about Linked Open Data. We would also like to reach those that are keen on fostering data-driven projects in their own communities.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

Diversity: Wikibase facilitates the management of data, collections, archives etc. internationally. Through the various Wikibase instances, institutions and organisations manage and share diverse and often underrepresented knowledge, and in this presentation we aim to demonstrate a variety of such instances from across the globe.

Collaboration: The Wikibase software is collaborative in its core. One of its core functions in its design is collaborative editing, and this is how it’s been largely used, the largest example of this being Wikidata. We aim to address the collaborative functions and uses through the showcases.

Future: In this presentation, we will address the prospects for Wikibase and our aspirations for the future development of the Wikibase ecosystem. We aim to address how we think Wikibase intersects and resonates with technological developments such as smart systems and edge computing, as well as its role in the future maintenance of digital cultural heritage internationally.
