I am a manager in the Movement Communications team at the Wikimedia Foundation. I’ve had the pleasure of supporting the Wikimedia movement as staff since May 2019. I’m originally from Iran and live in Toronto, Canada. I have worked for more than 10 years in the non-profit sector. A pivotal part was based out of Bangkok where I worked across Asia and the Pacific with highly marginalized populations, youth leaders, and volunteer activists on the response to HIV. I have a masters degree in international development from the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po. I have worked on communication, education, social justice, advocacy, human rights, migration, and gender and sexual diversity with grassroots communities, international NGOs, and the UN. Before joining the Foundation, I was working with UNESCO in Kabul, Afghanistan on education reform and curriculum design with a focus on lifelong learning, 21st century skills, and digital literacy. Nhu is a project manager with the Wikimedia Foundation. She supports different teams within Community Resilience & Sustainability, which includes supporting volunteer committees. At the present, her primary focus and priority is the Movement Charter Drafting Committee. This is her first in-person Wikimania ever! She’s excited and humbled to attend Wikimania, and experience the beating heart of the movement.

Daria Cybulska

Daria Cybulska has worked at Wikimedia UK since 2012, initially focusing on events, outreach, partnerships, and community development, and now serving as the Director of Programmes and Evaluation. In the last few years, she collaborated on Wikimedia’s 2030 global strategy with colleagues across the globe, a process that brought many reflections about accessibility, inclusion, and equity within collaborative knowledge projects.

Abstract & description

Abstract

Presentation and workshop on the Movement Charter content, followed by an open discussion to gather insights, inputs, and feedback from Wikimania participants to validate and improve the proposed texts. The session will focus primarily on the Global Council, Hubs and the Ratification methodology.

Description

The aim of the session is to ensure a good understanding of the content of the Movement Charter among participants, and to create mutual exchange about the value of and the content in the Movement Charter. Breakout groups and open Q&A help respond to questions participants may have.

The session will start with a short presentation on the content of each chapter, and after this we will go into breakout groups and work on answering open questions and give hands-on feedback on the charter. The session will end with an open Q&A for session participants (if time permits).

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

The Movement Charter is a Movement Strategy initiative proposed by the recommendation “Ensure Equity in Decision-Making”. The aim of the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy process has been to reimagine the collective future of the movement with a focus on better collaboration across the movement and embracing the diversity of perspectives present across the movement stakeholders. As a result, with the aim to define the future roles and responsibilities, mutual accountabilities, and ways of working in the movement, the Movement Charter is intrinsically linked with the theme of Wikimania this year.
