Abstract

Starting a new language project in Incubator can be daunting, no matter it’s a new Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikinews, Wikiversity, etc. Here’s some resources for you to start.

Description

In Indonesia, there are hundreds of languages, and dozens of Wikimedia projects. 17 projects were created from 2002 to 2006, three more in 2009-2013, and the last 10+ projects were created in the past 5 years.

In 2023 alone, we are expecting to welcome 7+ new projects, from 7+ languages in Indonesia: Gorontalo Wiktionary, Mandailing Wiktionary, Banjar Wikiquote, Sundanese Wikisource, Indonesian Wikivoyage, Nias Wikibooks, Makassarese Wikipedia, and Toba Wikipedia.

Since 2018, I was involved in several of the Indonesian local languages projects that were hatched, like Gorontalo Wikipedia, Minangkabau Wiktionary, Nias Wiktionary, Javanese Wikisource, and Gorontalo Wiktionary. From those experience, I felt the need for a better resource center for communities who wished to start a new project, particularly if it would be the first Wikimedia project for those communities.

I envision a central place where people can get ideas how to start their own Main Page, what templates/modules should be present, what kind of administrative pages and tasks are needed to start a new project, ideas for early contents (1000 most important Wikipedia articles, 1000 most important words, etc.) to populate the project, and even if there is a need for a special class for the first batch of admins in those projects.

Qn. How does your session relate to the event themes: Diversity, Collaboration Future?

The diversity is reflected from the various languages and projects mentioned above that will be used as examples. Collaboration is vital because the project cannot get approved without an active community collaborating for several months in Incubator. In the future, hopefully there will be more Indonesian language projects being hatched across the archipelago of Indonesia and Maritime South East Asia.
