Abstract & description
editAbstract
editFor WikiForHumanRights 2023 we invested in a regionalization strategy to help meet the needs of the international community running the campaign each year. During this two part panel, we will explore how regional organizers built variations of the campaign to increase the impact on regional capacity and contributors, and use the last 15-20 minutes of the session to discuss how we want to continue decentralizing the campaign into the broader Wikimedia movement, with more leadership from community members.
Description
edit2023 marked the third year with a #WikiForHumanRights Campaign focused on the Right to a Healthy Environment. Through the last three years of the campaign, we have filled significant knowledge gaps related to environmental and human rights topics on Wikimedia projects. However, the main focus of the campaign is helping regional and local organizers build techniques and strategies for addressing topics for impact in their own communities. During the 2023 version of the campaign, Campaign fellow Euphemia Uwandu building on the work of 2022 fellow Ruby Dimenshi-Brown, implemented an regional-ambassador model that helped us better decentralize the capacity building and support of organizers in the campaign. Through this regionalization strategy, we were able to provide more targeted context-specific knowledge gap support, greater focus on skills and capacity building and communications needs for each region. This panel will have two parts: first short reflections from regional ambassadors about how regionalized strategies developed for the campaign this year. In the final part of the session, we will focus on strategic questions related to the future of the campaign

The campaign has been a powerful tool for increasing collaboration and diversity of outreach programs, especially in communities in LATAM, MENA, and Sub Saharan Africa. We hope to increase the regionalization, and thus flexibility of the campaign in supporting the unique needs of different parts of the world in addressing new audiences and new communities.
