Abstract edit

Perhaps we are reluctant to think that Wikipedia is gamified, being a serious encyclopedia. But does Wikipedia contain game mechanics in its different spaces?

As a final university project, I was determined to use Gamification (apply game design elements into non-game contexts) on Wikipedia. That lead me to investigate which aspects of Wikipedia could be identified as “game mechanics”.

Indeed, I discovered various elements that could be seen as Gamification which were key to sustain editors’ motivation.

In the end, I designed a small Gamification Proposal with three activities.

If you want to know more or even prove Wikipedia is not gamified, come and enjoy this talk!

Session Outcomes edit

  • Learn what gamification is.
  • Learn why gamification is so powerful in building community health.
  • Learn what elements are found to be gamified inside Wikipedia.
  • Understand how difficult gamification actually is and how it could be applied.

I'm planning to attend this session live! edit
