Abstract

edit

Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is a public photo competition around cultural heritage monuments, organized by Wikimedia chapters, groups and local Wikipedia volunteers. During the past five years, the competition witnessed 10,000 participants on average, and a substantial percentage of them are contributors who had contributed to any Wikimedia project for the first time through WLM. They are essentially new volunteers for the movement. In the surveys conducted by the International Team, 60% of the newcomers said that they are "definitely" interested in participating further in the Wikimedia movement. However, we haven't been able to direct much efforts on engaging these newcomers after the campaign is over. The goal of this session is to explore various approaches at different levels (language, national, international) for following up with these newcomers and turn them into consistent contributors, to any Wikimedia project or other spaces in the movement.

Session Outcomes

edit

Post campaign engagement of participants: The conversation will not only help people involved with WLM but also other campaigns, which do have a lot of newcomers participating, because of the low-barrier entry in the Wikimedia movement that campaigns create.

We will continue the conversation in the 2021:Unconference on Floor 2.

I'm planning to attend this session live!
