Abstract

edit

During the 20 years Wikipedia and related projects have been growing around the world, accessibility of our user interfaces have not always been given an attention ranked among first priorities in order to match needs of people diversity.

A few months ago, as part of the online mediawiki Hackathon, a new user group formed specifically bringing accessibility experts and interested others into conversations about what accessibility problems need to be considered and addressed in some manner, and how to make those changes happen.

The group already yielded identification of scopes and priority axes for actions among which include the registration process, Wikispeech, sign languages, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, alternative text to images and providing alternative uncluttered text version of articles. This session will focus more on the last one with its specific stakes and aims.

Session Outcomes

edit

Our hope is that going out of this session, people will better understand the general context that led to the formalization of this project, what it aims to realize and why. Finding people with proper skills and time to make the project progress would be a wonderful bonus, but rising awareness of the topic and its concern will already be a great achievement, especially if people decide to join the Wikimedia Accessibility User Group conversations about what can be done to make improvements.

I'm planning to attend this session live!
