Abstract
editThe Creative Commons licenses are intended to share materials with the world, letting reusers know that the licensed material is legally free to use under a few simple conditions. However, when users do not comply with the terms of the license, even by mistake, they can be liable for copyright infringement. "Copyright trolling" is when licensors release CC licensed material with a goal of catching errors in compliance, not simply to correct them, but to extract hefty fees. CC is proposing principles and guidelines for license enforcement. In this session, we will describe commons copyright trolling and CC's work, and invite community participation in developing these and other ways to combat copyright trolling.
Session Outcomes
edit- Attendees will understand more about what "copyright trolling" is and how it affects users of freely-licensed material
- Attendees will learn about what Creative Commons is trying to do to address copyright trolling using CC-licensed works
- CC will learn more from the Wikimedia community about how copyright trolling affects Wikimedians and use that knowledge to develop better ways to address it
I'm planning to attend this session live!
