2019 talk:Partnerships/Volunteers needed to develop noncommercial social media to save civilization
In my considerable experience, involving a substantial amount of community organizing in disparate locales and frequently using social media as a basic component, I've found it is difficult and even discouraging to engage participants in long-term, goal-oriented action exclusively via social media. It would also seem to be particularly difficult to do so because assessing palpable results in an exercise such as the countering of global warming can be so difficult to gauge. It would seem that reinforcing those individuals and groups involved by measuring specific actions undertaken, i.e. the numbers of demonstrations, instances of earned media, meetings, conferences convened and attended, passage of legislation and creating and enforcement regulations, would be a useful tool. B.F. Skinner found a motivational tool was intermittent reinforcement. The meeting in Sweden should perhaps have a breakout of those with experience and interest.
