2019:Technology outreach & innovation/Coolest Tool Award 2019
This is an Accepted submission for the Technology space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editWiki communities around the globe have diverse use cases and technical needs. Volunteer developers are often the first to find and address those use cases. They experiment with new ideas, build local and global solutions and bridge workflow gaps in our software.
There are incredibly many great tools out there. It’s time to celebrate this!
The Coolest Tool Academy is hosting the first ever Coolest Tool Award. We will ask for nominations in July, and showcase the winners of the Coolest Tool Award 2019 in this session.
Join us to learn about tools & celebrate the people who build them!
The Coolest Tool Academy.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
Volunteer developers support the Wikimedia projects with their programming skills, deep insights in onwiki workflows and ideas for new solutions. Their work is key for both the Wikimedia projects and the broader ecosystem. Tools help to address specific use cases of language and project communities, make content gaps visible, support data import, make it easier to maintain and curate content and much more. The Coolest Tool Award aims to acknowledge that, and make volunteer developers' work more visible to everyone (SDG 9, 10, 11).
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
- Tool developers receive appreciation for their work
- Attendees learn about the role tools play in the Wikimedia projects
- Attendees gain an overview of great & useful tools, and know how to find and use them
