Description & Background
edit- The Growing Wikimedia's Readership space will facilitate, support, and advocate understanding and serving potential Wikimedia readers in countries where access to the internet is quickly growing. Lack of name recognition challenges the Wikimedia movement's ability to invite new readers, contributors, and advocates to join our communities. If you don't know about Wikipedia, how can you use it, contribute to it, or advocate for it? Community members can do a lot to bring new readers to Wikimedia projects where they live. So far, the Foundation and communities have built video campaigns, broadcast radio shows, developed new product features and more. Recently, the Foundation launched new grant types within Rapid Grants to support this work. This space would be a session to share completed, ongoing, and upcoming projects to bring new readers to Wikimedia, not limited to awareness.
Focus of the space
edit- Sessions about how we can work together to bring more people to Wikimedia projects. Examples: using social media to raise awareness, offline projects to raise awareness, how new readers use our content, etc.
- The sessions would focus on sharing and brainstorming ways to bring new readers to Wikimedia projects through awareness and other means.
Information for sessions
editWhat can the sessions include?
edit- Lightning talks of past projects
- Information about branding
- Framing the awareness problem
- Product development for growth in readership
- Offline readership
Sessions will be diverse in format and will include:
- lightning talks (5 min – 10 min)
- panels (30 min – 45 min)

Relationship to the Sustainable Development Goals
editWe believe the following SDGs are relevant to our space. Please keep them in mind when proposing a session -
Get involved!
editWe are encouraging Wikimedia community members in creating this space, so it can reflect the wishes and needs of our community. Besides submitting, you are welcome to let us know if there are any topics/workshops that you'd like to see in the Growing Wikimedia's Readership Space. Depending upon on your inputs, we will be reaching out of relevant individuals, affiliates, and organizations, to propose sessions. Some ideas:
- How to promote Wikimedia projects on social media
- Innovative, offline ways to promote Wikimedia projects
- How does the world see Wikimedia brands
- Lightning talks for different programs for awareness and their impact (video tutorials, rickshaw campaign, etc)
- Increasing Readership of Wikipedia projects among students

Discussion
editFeel free to make suggestions and start a discussion about the Growing Wikimedia's Readership space.
Will the room be free after our session?
edit@AGomez (WMF): @Wikilover90: Hey, we are leading the session "Updating the desktop experience for Wikipedia" on Sunday at 14:30 in the Szymborska (A5137) room. On the schedule it currently looks like there are no sessions scheduled afterwards in that room. I was wondering: in the event that people are still engaged in discussion towards the end of the session, would it be okay for us to let the discussion continue in that room?
Thanks, AHollender (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hello AHollender (WMF) It should be fine. The space belongs to us during the duration of break time as well. So, we can continue if we need to do discussions. Wikilover90 (talk) 05:39, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
