In 2008, volunteers of Wikimedia Netherlands developed 'Wikiportret'. We since have perfected this web-based tool to get license free images of notable people, and would like to share it's usefullnes with you, and interest other communities to adopt the tool.

Wikiportret has recently been updated. In a little over 10 years, we've collected almost 5000 free licensed images of notable Dutch and Flemish people. If the Wikipedia infobox doesn't have a picture, it says "Do you want to donate a selfmade picture of this person?". People go to wikiportret.nl and, without the hassle of uploading through Commons, we guide them through an upload form, different licenses and a short OTRS procedure. Then, if all is correct, an OTRS agent uploads the image to Commons and adds it to the relevant pages.

The Dutch site gets about 10-15 free images a week.

Relationship to the theme

This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: Wikiportret is a new technology that helps in gathering images, to illustrate of the sum of all knowledge.

Session outcomes

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

  1. People will have learned what Wikiportret is
  2. People want to contact the Dutch Chapter, in order to have Wikiportret translated in their own language

Each Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:

  • Lightning talk Poster

Requirements

The session will work best with these conditions:

  • Room
    • small classroom
    • projector + screen
  • Audience:
    • 15-20
    • People involved or with an interest in images and/or OTRS and/or Commons admins
  • Recording:
    • It would be a straight forward presentation with free-lincensed slides, so no limitations.
