2019:Partnerships/Partners in open knowledge: The impact of Wikimedians in Residence
This is an Accepted submission for the Partnerships space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editWikimedia UK's work in partnership with the cultural sector is transforming the public’s engagement with cultural heritage collections and delivering increased reach and impact for some of the world’s leading galleries, libraries, archives and museums. The Wikimedian in Residence programme is the key activity through which we build partnerships with major cultural institutions and in this session we will provide an overview of the key findings from our recent research into the long term impact of these residencies.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
This session will address the sustainable development goal of Partnerships for the Goals, as partnerships between Wikimedia UK and other third sector organisations - particularly from
the cultural sector - underpin the activities which form the basis of our recent research, explored in this session. However, given the nature of the partnerships covered, the session also has a relationship to sustainable development goals 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions).
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
By the end of the session, participants will have learned more about the Wikimedian in Residence programme in the UK, and how the key findings from our recent research could be applied within their own setting. In particular, people will be aware of the four different kinds of impact that can be achieved through a Wikimedian in Residence (impact on reach, external image, organisational culture and the ability to create change at scale), and the seven recommendations of best practice that we believe significantly increase the likelihood of achieving sustainable impact by hosting a Wikimedian in Residence.

Session type
editEach Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:
- Lightning talk
- Discussion-based training
- Roundtable discussion forum
- Presentation
Requirements
editThe session will work best with these conditions:
- Room:
- Audience:
- Recording:
I would be happy to run this session as a short lightning talk - or longer presentation - in which case the audience and room could be any size, but I'd need some kind of projector/screen ideally. This session format would lend itself to being recorded. For a more discursive session such as training or a roundtable, a smaller group (perhaps up to 15 or so participants) would be necessary. For this type of session, participants with some experience of running projects with partners from the cultural sector would be ideal.
