2019:Partnerships/How partnership with government is important in emerging communities
This is an Accepted submission for the Partnerships space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editWikipedia articles aren't often illustrated with pictures, which makes it less informative. For ex. a lot of important places, leaders, athletes don't have their picture on Wikipedia articles, though they’re important for the reader. “As a picture is worth a thousand words” illustrating Wikipedia articles with images makes article more informative and reader-friendly. But it isn't easy to add images to every Wikipedia article, as things aren’t accessible and maybe it isn’t approachable, which creates an information gap in the content of Wikipedia articles. Being a volunteer from a small community and from a culturally diverse region, we faced the same challenge when many articles of my state aren’t illustrated with images. With few active editors, it isn’t possible to represent every part of the region, where we thought of larger content donors and we collaborated with the Government of Odisha to release its content under free license. Which resulted in Odisha being the first state in India to release its social media content under Creative Commons license.
