2019:Partnerships/Free software as a partnership
This is an Accepted submission for the Partnerships space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editThe Wikimedia movement produces MediaWiki, a knowledge management software for massively open participation, and various related tools. Other organizations use it in ways that advance the Wikimedia vision of everyone sharing the sum of human knowledge. We tend not to think of that as a partnership or potential partnership, but maybe we should. The lightning talk will show some examples of how Wikimedia software supports non-Wikimedia work aligned with our mission, and how our movement sometimes benefits from non-Wikimedia work that is supported by Wikimedia sotware.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: The lightning talk will showcase various non-Wikimedia projects that focus on some sustainable development goal (education, sustainability, clean power etc) and are helped by the availability of MediaWiki in doing so.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved: The audience gains perspective on a potential new type of partnership.
