2019:Multimedia knowledge/Structured Data on Commons hands-on training
This is an Accepted submission for the Multimedia space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editIn 2019, Wikimedia Commons is undergoing a major update: it is now possible to describe files on Wikimedia Commons with multilingual, structured, machine-readable data from Wikidata.
This hands-on tutorial for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons newbies will teach you, step by step, how to get started with structured data on Commons: how to upload files with structured data, how to edit existing files and add structured data to them, how to search structured data on Commons. If, by August 2019, some nice volunteer-built tools already exist that allow to work with structured data at scale, these will also be demonstrated.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
- Participants can upload, edit and search files with structured data - in their own language!
Session leader(s)

(This proposed session is very similar and probably complementary to Wikidata for Wikimedia Commons users and I'm open to discussing with the space leaders and User:Juandev to combine both sessions in a useful way.)
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
Multimedia is an important part of advancing several important themes in the Sustainable Development Goals:
- Quality education -- searchable educational multimedia that can be discovered in any language strengthens the utility of mother tongues and mother tongue education on the internet. Much of the work that our communities do to preserve and capture culture are captured in Wikimedia Commons.
- Peace, justice and strong institutions-- having a free and open environment for sharing multimedia in the global context, and the work that commons photographers do (like covering protests, cultural events, and public gatherings of different kinds), advances the transparency and access to information for everyone in the world.
- Zero hunger and Good health and wellbeing -- well labeled information about the living world around us and the human experience advances the ways in which communities can share from and learn from the experiences of others.
- Industry, innovation and infrastructure -- with structured data on Wikimedia projects in general, the Wikimedia movement contributes essential multilingual IT and knowledge infrastructure to the world.
Session type
editThe program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:
- Technology-based training
Requirements
editThe session will work best with these conditions:
- Room: A workshop space where up to 30 participants can comfortably work on their laptops. Tables and chairs, good wifi, screen and projector, power strips for all.
- Audience: Anyone who wants to start working with Wikimedia Commons. No prior knowledge needed. Around 30 people is probably a maximum to keep the workshop manageable.
- Recording: Yes please! Such a tutorial will be very useful for people to watch and follow along afterwards.
