This session will draw on the work of the project, Digitising African in the Dancehall: A Wikipedia Intervention, delivered in partnership with AfroCROWD UK and Decolonizing the Archive last year. The project aimed to reflect the African origins of notable, internationally well-known and popular dance styles of Jamaican Dancehall. Inspired by the work of Caribbean scholars such as Carolyn Cooper and Édouard Glissant, we also aim to create an opportunity for participants in the Space to consider limitations and opportunities of how embodied knowledge can be represented on Wikimedia projects and in the open movement more broadly.

AfroCROWD UK is a branch of the AfroCROWD (Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia) an initiative and Wikimedia User Group which seeks to increase awareness of the Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture and software movements among potential editors of African descent, and improve contents about the African Diaspora. Formally recognised in 2017, AfroCROWD UK has partnered with organisation such as AfroTech Fest, Black Cultural Archives and the Institute of Historical Research, University of London to deliver editathons, workshops and presentations.

Session outcomes

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

• an introduction to African and African-Caribbean scholarship about embodied knowledge
• learned about the work of AfroCROWD UK and AfroCROWD's broader transnational work across the African Diaspora
• discussed how embodied knowledge can be better represented on Wikimedia projects
• developed strategies for documentation, equitable partnership building and description
• considered issues of building equitable partnerships
• introduction to ethical considerations when working with margnalised knowledges in the Open knowledge movement

This session relates to the core of the Multimedia Knowledge in considering how both how non-text knowledges are represented in Wikimedia projects, how video/gifs are used in the encyclopedia and what is excluded by failing to include those knowledges.
