The world needs more metaliterate citizens. Metaliterate citizens are participatory, actively engaging in community settings and social media, where they take responsibility for the information they produce and share. They are civic minded, acknowledging that individuals need to be responsible for the communities they design and build. Metaliterate citizens value openness, supporting transparent teaching and learning in communities and having empathy in social spaces to gain a deeper understanding of individuals and groups with different perspectives from their own. And they reflect on what they do and don't know and work toward filling gaps in knowledge.

Wikipedia is a rich community and open resource that can help to develop metaliterate citizens. It embodies many of the metaliteracy characteristics. Becoming an active participant in Wikipedia encourages growth as a metaliterate learner and citizen, allowing people to find and contribute their voices and energy to larger issues that will extend beyond Wikipedia into other settings.

This session will introduce metaliteracy and the global and personal importance of metaliterate citizenship. Participants will be introduced to one example of how Wikipedia contributed to university students' development as metaliterate citizens. Most importantly, participants in the session will have the opportunity to brainstorm and share ideas for using Wikipedia to start to develop metaliterate citizens in a variety of library and educational settings. The diversity of ideas will provide a rich resource for those interested in working towards this goal.

Relationship to the theme

This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:

This session speaks directly to the goals of quality education and gender equality. Quality education includes learning that promotes "a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development." Individuals who develop the traits and abilities of a metaliterate citizen will see themselves as global citizens (target 4.7), open to the rich cultural diversity that they and others bring to sustainable communities such as Wikipedia. This mindset will encourage them to see themselves in contributors in other communities, multiplying the sustainability factor. Women who recognize their value as participatory metaliterate citizens will be more likely to see themselves as leaders, a critical step toward their equal representation at the leadership level (target 5.5). Working within Wikipedia and other online communities will leverage information and communication technology on the path to gender equality (target 5.B).

Generate and collect ideas for using Wikipedia to develop metaliterate citizens that are applicable in their library and educational settings

The session will work best with these conditions:

Room: The room described would be appropriate

Audience: This would work for any number of participants, but it would be ideal to have at least 10, so that a number of ideas would be generated. No prior knowledge needed.

Recording: While the initial short presentation would be appropriate for recording, the rest of the session (individual brainstorming, pair work, reporting back) would not be appropriate for fixed-camera recording
