Libraries/The Library Catalog as a Gateway to Wikidata Contributions

Description

Libraries have begun integrating data from external sources like Wikidata with data in the library catalog, which is where library patrons search for and discover library resources. This external data can provide additional contextual information about people, places, and subjects that are not typically present in library data. When acknowledging Wikidata as the source of this additional information, libraries have the opportunity to invite patrons to contribute their own knowledge or research about a topic back into Wikidata. This will be a participatory session to brainstorm ideas for encouraging contributions to Wikidata via the library catalog.

Relationship to the theme

This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:

This session aligns with SDG#4, Quality Education, by finding wa ys to make it easier for library catalog users, often students, scholars, and people with local knowledge to contribute their work and knowledge back to Wikidata where it is freely available and can be used by all.

It also falls under SDG#17, Partnerships for the Goals, as collaboration between the library and Wikidata communities is mutually beneficial. Wikidata provides additional contextual information and links to other sources of data that library catalogs traditionally do not contain. Library catalog users may be able to provide specialized information or knowledge about local communities not already covered in great depth in Wikidata.

Session outcomes

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

Understanding potential barriers to contributing to Wikidata with an entry point through the library catalog.
Identifying education strategies and outreach ideas to encourage library patrons to contribute to Wikidata.
Ideas for using existing tools or creating new tools to facilitate contributions via the library catalog.

The session will work best with these conditions:

Room: The classroom with whiteboard and projector/screen configured for an interactive session

Audience: Around 20 people

Recording: The initial short presentation would be appropriate for recording, but the rest of the brainstorming session would not be appropriate for fixed-camera recording
