Closing the knowledge gap on Africa is a common goal for both the global Wikimedia community and the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL). The ASCL is a knowledge institute that undertakes research and is involved in teaching about Africa. In 2018 the ASCL library has started to engage with Wikidata by uploading its African Studies Thesaurus (a structured vocabulary of more than 12500 English terms in the field of African studies) to Wikidata and by regularly adding Africa-related publications in the context of WikiCite.

Adding scholarly publications to Wikidata is only a small extra effort for the information specialist who maintains the library’s acquisition list and scholarly article alert service. Thanks to a couple of minutes extra time spent, titles on Equatorial Guinea are now present in Wikidata, which is great. On the other hand, no single title of the ASCL’s weekly additions to Wikidata is actually being used. There is no consensus to use the citation data from Wikidata in Wikipedia articles. The use of citation template Cite Q is discouraged. Africa publications in the humanities and social scienses uploaded by the ASCL and other volunteers drown in the sea of scholarly publications in natural sciences. How to make these titles visible? Is there a way to make the titles being used ? Is the ASCL just flooding and trashing Wikidata?

This interactive presentation consists of 2 parts. A 10 min use case presentation of how the ASCL contributes to WikiCite. The presenters share some lessons learned and some (unsolved) challenges the institute faces. 20 min interaction with the audience in which the presenters would like to invite the audience to share their experience with contributing to WikiCite.
