2019:Languages/Sharing the sum of all knowledge from a subjects perspective
This is a Closed submission for Wikimania 2019. It has been reviewed and was not accepted. |
Description
editThe diverse Wikimedia projects are subject oriented. Wikipedia gives you articles on a subject in a language, Wikidata provides structured data and based on preferences, the data is shown in a language. Commons is about images and with the Wikidatafication becomes language agnostic. Both Wiktionary and Wikidata with its lexeme support inform about words in any language and how they are conjugated.
In the past, experiments have been done to use data as a base for Wikipedia articles to be created. Volapuk and Cebuano come to mind. Their data their effort was based on has never been integrated in the Wikiverse. The objective of this talk is to consider using Wikidata as the base to present the data and to generate articles, articles that are cached not saved.
Many of the essential parts to realise this have been present for a long time. Reasonator shows information in any la nguage for years now. Recently Wikidata has been expanded with a tool that may be used to show if data for an item is 'complete'. Finding if complete data has the required (minimum?) labels in a given language is an obvious expansion of the usage.
There are many linguists around, making the necessary functionality for any and all languages is not trivial but achievable.
In this presentation/workshop I aim to bring interested people together with the objective to document and expand on this. This is not to be about policies in projects why this may or may not be done.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
As people add labels to a Wikidata item a network of subjects are affected. It adds to the tipping point where an article may be generated. Until that time pictures, a Reasonator page, relations to other subjects may be exposed in a tabbed presentation. When used in combination with search functionality for a language information becomes available and it may lead to (free) knowledge.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
People will gain an interest and cooperate on expanding the building blocks needed. A report will be written about the findings.
