2019:Languages/MediaWiki software and documentation translation marathon

MediaWiki.org, Meta wiki, and translatewiki.net are used to translated the software user interface and user manuals of the software that is used by Wikimedia sites. Everything starts in English, so software is 100% usable in English by definition. But what about other languages? In a few languages there are dedicated volunteers who regularly check for new things to translate, and keep their languages to 100%. But the localization in many languages is much lower than 100%.
In this session you will learn how to use the translation tools to make the software platform that is used by Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource and all other Wikimedia projects completely usable in your language, and you'll get hands-on experience with translating it.
Relationship to the theme edit
This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
- Quality education (thanks to being able to use Wikipedia, Wikisource and other parts of the Wikimedia platform completely in your own language, without having to learn English or another foreign language)
- Reduced inequalities (thanks to being able to use the software in any language exactly as it is used in English—this can be precisely numerically measured)
Session outcomes edit
At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
Each language in which there is a participant will increase the percentage of localization of one of the software components that are used by Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites: core MediaWiki, Mobile Frontend, Visual Editor, Wikibase, or their user manuals. The percentage for each language and component will be checked in the beginning and the end of the session.

- People who can write in any language are welcome.
- If you only know English, you are welcome to observe and learn how the software around Wikipedia is translated to another language. It's quite interesting and educational—in the past English speakers who saw such things were impressed by this world that they've never witnessed so closely. If you live or work in a place where there are many people who speak another language (for example immigrants), you may learn how to organize such an event.
- To participate actively, you have to be able to write in a language other than English, and you also have to be able to read English or another language into which the software of Wikipedia is translated well.[1]
- You need your own laptop.
- It is recommended, but not required, to have some familiarity with basic wiki syntax, such as [[links]].
