editCreated in 2014, WikiJournal publishes a set of open-access, peer-reviewed academic journals with no publishing costs to authors. Its goal is to provide free, quality-assured knowledge. Secondly, it aims to bridge the Academia-Wikipedia gap by enabling expert contributions in the traditional academic publishing format to improve Wikipedia content. It started with WikiJournal of Medicine in 2014.
In this session I will make a presentation about the project, as well as current developments of it. Notably, there is a drive to develop this project into a separate sister project of Wikimedia Foundation (See Meta:WikiJournal).
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: The journals in the project, including WikiJournal of Medicine, are in many ways unique as having a broad scope and at the same time publish without cost for authors or readers. It makes this possible mainly by using the wiki platform to bypass many editorial tasks. As such, researchers from all over the world, even those that are financially limited, are free to contribute to building the world of knowledge.
