Having recognized the Wikimedia Foundation free knowledge projects as important platforms to share research findings with the public, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, adopted a multi-component strategy to improve the health content shared on Wikipedia. This approach (described in https://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2018/07/23/osh-wikipedia/) includes:
- Contracting Wikipedians-in-Residence.
- Coordination with NIOSH staff to identify priorities and contribute to strategic planning of the activities geared to improving occupational safety and health content into Wikimedia.
- Contributing data, public domain training materials and videos to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
- Providing training and support to staff, so researchers and interns can edit themselves or create new pages
- Creating the WikiProject_Occupational_Safety_and_Health
- Connecting Wikipedians with NIOSH resources
- Organizing local and global events and campaigns on specific topics and
- Partnering with university graduate and training programs in adopting the platform developed by the Wiki Education Foundation so that students are assigned to add content specific to the subject matter of the course they are taking to Wikipedia. NIOSH researchers and Wikipedians-in-Residence offer an extra layer of support to articles related to occupational safety and health.
Information on a wide range of occupational health topics were covered through our efforts, which were detailed in a series of NIOSH Science Blogs and by a WikiEducation Foundation Blog. The level of commitment from our partners was exceptional, particularly because Wikimedia platforms offer more detailed metrics than we can obtain elsewhere. Beyond the number of views, one can also learn about the topics that interest students, as well as the public in general. We will also share lessons learned through our continuously evolving approach.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:
The CDC argues that plain language makes it easier for everyone to understand and use health information, a direct connection to the Good Health and Well-being (SDG3) goal. The Quality Education (SDG4) goal is intrinsically connected to the principles of critically examining information and science translation guiding the approach that will be described on the presentation. We will highlight different partnership schemes to further the goal of making quality health information freely available to the public, so it also relates to the Partnerships for the Goals (SDG17).
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
By learning of an institutional approach to improving the health content shared on Wikipedia, participants might adopt portions of it or seek partnerships to do so.
The speaker will learn from the audience (through feedback during Q&A) about how well this topic resonates. Strategies for earlier (relative to career) engagement of biomedical experts will be explored.
