editThe Wikimedia community has indeed in recent times focused on increasing the readership of Wikimedia platforms in different parts of the world. One of the ways through which the Nigerian community has tried to solve this problem is by establishing Wikimedia fan clubs in different major universities across the federation. This initiative has greatly helped in growing: wikimedia readership and participation in Nigeria.
As the president of one of the major fan clubs, this session seeks to talk about some of the activities we have undertaken to grow our club, and notify the members Wikimedia community on the intricacies involved in leading the Wikimedia community in Nigeria. the lesson is attempting to teach is on how to manage the lack of participation from club members (editors) and on how to spur or promote editing and creation of content among club members.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: The session is related to the SDGs on Quality Education and Gender Equality. The session seeks to communicate with the members of the Wikimedia community on how the creation of Wikimedia Campus groups or Wikimedia Fan clubs can improve the quality of Education that university students in Nigeria receive. The session also seeks to address how the creation of the Wikimedia campus communities is addressing the Gender imbalance among the editorship of wikipedia and all other Wikimedia tools.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
- Members of the Wikimedia community will be aware of the problems involved in leading a Wikimedia campus group in Nigeria.
- Community members will have reason to replicate this initiative in their local communities.
