Wikidocumentaries is a maker space for citizen historians. It traverses Wikimedia content in visual layouts and mashes it up with openly available GLAM content on the web. The user can navigate the data stored in Wikidata, follow any recorded connection and see the content visualised on timelines and maps. Wikidocumentaries already leverages Wikimedia content for underrepresented and underserved language communities by making all content available in any language, and making it easily translatable where that language content is missing. This is where the project is now.

The citizen historian will then be able to correct and add information: curate images to Wikimedia Commons, add and fix data, translate captions and articles. When the project starts to take advantage of the underlying Wikibase, it will be possible to add new topics and articles that are outside the scope of Wikimedia projects. However, if the content should belong to Wikimedia, it will be easy to import it, even automatically. Wikidocumentaries is an evolving crowdsourcing platform.

Work with local history communities is starting with a pi lot with a community garden museum. Wikidocumentaries will be used to record stories and chart the history of the community and each of the tiny gardens through geography, personalities, vegetation and more.

This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner:

Gender inequality, Reduced inequalities

The mission of Wikidocumentaries is to promote lesser topics and the knowledge of marginal communities. It does so by allowing this content to be seamlessly tied to Wikimedia content but especially by creating an avenue of incorporating it into the Wikimedia projects.

Quality education

By promoting translations to marginal languages, Wikidocumentaries is creating educational material for those language communities.

Session outcomes

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved: There will be an understanding of the opportunities the project offers in each of the attendees' contexts, and they will feel encouraged to participate by translating, making their content available or by joining to develop either the core technologies or participatory components.

Each Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:

Presentation, lightning talk or part of a panel – I would enjoy being able to present and discuss the project in a standard presentation, but lightning talks are a superb format to give a general idea. Alternatively, I would offer to participate with the project in a panel about crowdsourcing.
