Title
editEmbedding Wikidata into GLAM practice
Description
editd services, from simple queries to c reate connections between collections, to a Wikidata powered timeline and using Wikidata entities to improve its volunteer platform.
This talk will advocate for the use of Wikidata as a cost effective way for GLAMs to create and share open linked data and will demonstrate how Wikidata is increasingly being seen as an acceptable and useful element in cultural institutions core infrastructure. The talk will focus on demonstrating the value to GLAMs of sharing and reusing Wikidata and helping to understand how we can encourage policy makes and senior management to embrace Wikidata as a valuable asset in their delivery of digital resources.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: This session will address the conference theme by demonstrating the extent to which Wikimedia projects and their open ethos is being embraced by cultural institutions. The talk will discuss how leveraging Wikidata in the culture sector can promote language diversity and equality, with a focus on providing access to Welsh language content and data. Reusing Wikidata also supports quality education, by giving added value and context to historic collections, and by providing new ways to query and explore historical data. Wikidata also connects collections together, creating a web of cultural heritage information from multiple institutions around the world. For education, this is an incredibly powerful concept.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

- The speaker will have set out model for engagement with Wikimedia projects.
