Title
edit10 years of Wiki Loves photo competitions: memories and inspiration
Description
editIn 2009 the first photo competitions under the name 'Wiki Loves' popped up. In 2010, the successful Wiki Loves Monuments concept started in the Netherlands, and in subsequent years many more editions followed in dozens of countries across the globe. Annually, tens of countries celebrate natural and cultural heritage through photo competitions while collecting millions of photos for Wikipedia and sister projects.
In this presentation, I want to make a historic journey along these events: both as a joyful memory and as inspiration for those that didn't experience them. We will take a trip down memory lane on how the competition format developed, but also try to learn from many ideas that have been tried. The strength of these competitions lies in the diverse ways national teams implement the competition, and there are many ideas and approaches to be shared.
Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: Wiki Loves photo competitions have become an effective method of collaborating with various cultural heritage organizations across the world. While they are more public-focused than many other GLAM activities, they require a thoughtful approach toward the cultural heritage sector.
Session outcomes
editAt the end of the session, the following will have been achieved: Visitors should have sufficient insights on the Wiki Loves concept to determine if they want to organize a competition in their country, and be inspired by the ideas from other countries. They should understand how a Wiki Loves competition can help them build relationships with institutions, and welcome new contributors.

Session type
editEach Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:
- Lecture
If selected for sufficient length, I intend to gather input from the various national organizers to collect relevant examples and stories. This is a format I have used before (coolest projects etc). I would start the lecture with a more general introduction to get everyone on the same page, and then move on to more individual examples, lessons etc.
