We are all engaged to set knowledge free. Our aim is collect, curate and distribute educational content. Some people note that Wikipedia is heavily text based, regardless of the existence of Wikicommons and Wikidata. Moreover, the content is skewed heavily towards academic content. The 1996 w:Delors report to UNESCO identified four pillars of education:

  1. Learning to know – a broad general knowledge with the opportunity to work in depth on a small number of subjects.
  2. Learning to do – to acquire not only occupational skills but also the competence to deal with many situations and to work in teams.
  3. Learning to be – to develop one’s personality and to be able to act with growing autonomy, judgment and personal responsibility.
  4. Learning to live together – by developing an understanding of other people and an appreciation of interdependence.

Does Wikipedia educate? What impact do we have on the life of people who look at Wikipedia pages on their device? Will they only gain knowledge as mentioned in the first pillar above? Do we want to limit Wikipedia to this first pillar. Imagine you have access in ways to learn from all four pillars all there is to learn? Why would we want to collect and provice educational content on the pillars learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together? How should we do that? What should we do?

At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:

  • Participants are aware of a series of blindspots in what people can learn from Wikipedia
  • Identification of potential transformational change to viewers of Wikipedia content, where can we have true social impact
  • Identification of barriers to grow
  • Inspiration for a potential broadening of the scope of Wikipedia

Requirements

The session will work best with these conditions:

  • Room:
    • Circle setting for twenty to eighty people
    • Four flip overs
    • Tables to the side
  • Audience:
  • Twenty to eighty people
  • Prior experience in contributing to a free and open content would be nice to have
  • Prior experience in viewing Wikipedia content is necessary
  • Recording:
  • There will be most likely multiple conversation happening simultaneously, like subgroups for each of the four pillars.
