Session type
editEach Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:
- Lightning talk - 10 min.
Description
editAdding educational materials to Wikibooks, Wikiversity or Wikipedia can be a time consuming process with little reward for educators other than the use others get. Academia typically only recognizes publications in peer reviewed publishing venues which are typically only accessible if one has a subscription or a library has a subscription. This leads to rather low contribution rate from those in higher education who should have the most time to do so. Traditional books are difficult to update whereas electronic resources hosted on a wiki can be continually improved. but traditi onal books typically can give greater recognition because the author can be more easily identified. The aim of the session will be to discuss how some of these barriers can be overcome and improvements could be made to the infrastructure to support greater collaboration, in particular for technical areas in computer science, engineering where there is rapid change. Of particular interest are also interactions of technology with the arts and humanities.

Relationship to the theme
editThis session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: High quality education for all through the availability of free to access educational materials is an important topic. However, educational materials are rarely free to make and the quality can vary widely. Even if the materials are freely available, accessing them can also be costly. The session will discuss ways of encouraging contributions to Wikipedia, Wikibooks and Wikiversity that will allow for high quality educational outcomes for a wide variety of people.

Enabling wider access
