2019:Community Growth/Telugu village project: Fixing a large quality issue and growing community
This is an Accepted submission for the Growth space at Wikimania 2019. |
Description
editTelugu Village articles project aimed to shoot two birds at a shot. One: Fixing a larger quality concern of community and Two: Expanding community.
In 2006, after a consensus in Telugu Wikipedia Village pump, community members started creating one line articles about Villages of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Telugu speaking states in India. 10-15 member sized active community continued to contribute improvement of these articles, years together. The community expressed their concern about these stubs for 10 years.
Based on the idea of Indian environmentalist Prof. Madhav Gadgil, Telugu Wikipedia community and CIS-A2K came together to start a project to improve 20 thousand plus stub articles with content. Idea is to improve content about education, healthcare, infrastructure and other important aspects based on Indian government census data in a semi-automated way in a 3rd party platform and Wikipedians will manually check the content and update on-wiki. This quality improvement project also helped the community to improve participation. In the search of finding a right volunteer for this project, organizers could find a Wikipedian who became an integral part of the community after improving 13 thousand plus articles. Yarra Ramarao, a retired government revenue employee dedicating his entire time on a quest to improve thousands of articles.
