EU Copyright Directive Transposition Bootshop

The Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive is now official and EU Member States will have until 7 June 2021 to transpose it into national law. Many other countries across the world are looking into it and beginning to pick up bad and good ideas.
If you want to gain insight into the details of the text and learn what free knowledge can gain or lose from it during the national copyright reforms that it will trigger, then this bootshop is a definite benchmark in your Wikimania schedule!
NB: A bootshop is funnier than a workshop, but shorter than a bootcamp.
Relationship to the theme edit
This session will address the conference theme — Wikimedia, Free Knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals — in the following manner: The EU Copyright Directive and the national implementations it triggers will define how knowledge, how information, cultural heritage and educational materials, will be shared and used all over Europe and beyond for the decades to come. It directly impacts the questions arou nd quality education and the creation of sustainable knowledge societies.
Session outcomes edit
At the end of the session, the following will have been achieved:
- Participants know what freedom the Copyright Directive gives to Member States to include additional freedoms.
- Participants know what risks for free knowledge the Copyright Directive brings and how they can be avoided.
- Participants have a clear idea of what key demands to communicate to their national legislators.

Each Space at Wikimania 2019 will have specific format requests. The program design prioritises submissions which are future-oriented and directly engage the audience. The format of this submission is a:

The session will work best with these conditions:
- Room:
It would be good to have a projector and a room that allows participants to take notes/work on laptops if necessary.
- Audience:
We are hoping for at least 30 participants. The main target group are EU based Wikimaniacs that will work on transposition. As ideas of the EU copyright reform are being copied across the world, all others are more than welcome to learn how to fend bad practices off.

Recording is not necessary.
